Located just 5kms north from Kempsey, on the Pacific Highway, is the small village of Frederickton and home of the famous Fredo Pie Shop.
The brain-child of Nola Turnbull, the pie shop was established in April 1993. Nola had purchased the then small general store and ice cream shop and wanted another drawcard to the business so came up with the concept of home-made pies to complement the ice creams.
Starting on her own from very humble beginnings, Nola has weathered many storms over the years but through hard work, persistence and a belief in her product, she has come out on top. She employs a number of locals and sources all her products locally including her meat from local sources.
This small business has really put Frederickton on the map both locally, nationally and internationally. Fredo Pies shop operates solely from the shop in Macleay Street, (Pacific Hwy) Frederickton and is frequented by many tourists and locals as well as numerous famous people including Russell Crowe, and the teams from Getaway and The Today Show who have both run stories on this unique business with its very individual facade.
The Pie Shop has also been promoted by John Laws and David Koch on their shows as a place to call in to when traveling on the Pacific Highway. Nola has twice been a finalist in the David Koch Small Business Awards and a recipient of the John Laws “Keeping the Dream Alive” awards.
The business has in excess of 60 awards in National Pie Competitions and was recently voted as one of the top five pie shops in Australia. Fredo Pies has also been featured in Ralph and Take Five magazines and as part of a German TV documentary on Australia. Fredo Pies even has its own listing in the Lonely Planet Guide to Australia.
Fredo Pies opens from seven to seven, seven days a week, closing only on Christmas Day.
